Ruskin Beechler Stone (1906-2003) was best known as a painter of portraits. From his earliest
beginning, Ruskin's skill and talent was unsurpassed by his contemporaries. At the young age of
13 he started a lifelong apprenticeship under Karl Kappes. By 18, he was enrolled at the Chicago
Art Institute in which he furthered his study in painting. The time spent in Chicago allowed him to
develop relationships with Emile Gruppe, Paul Strich and Ken Gore. His studies with Gruppe lasted
for nearly two years; during this time Ruskin painted some his most unique and desirable eastern
landscapes and marine paintings.
Though Stone displayed great artistic talents, he sought a more stable career, knowing he had
family to support. He adapted his artistic skills to the commercial art field while working in New
York. These studies led to his career in commercial art. After many years in New York City, Ruskin
moved back to Toledo, accepting a job in the marketing department at the infant radio station
WSPD. Stone's work at the station led to great advances for the city. It was Ruskin Stone and
George Storer Jr. who introduced television to Toledo. After a long association with Storer
Broadcasting, Ruskin opened his own advertising agency that would later become the Stone
Advertising Company. His son later took over the business, allowing Stone to devote all his time to
the art that he loved most, painting.
Stone's passion was pastel; some of his most compelling portraits were done in this medium. While
he worked skillfully in oil as well, he fluidly controlled the pastel, blending it into incredibly
dimensional forms, making them all the more appealing.
Ruskin Stone: Portraits by an Artist is proud to represent a fine selection of both oils and pastels,
all of which are worthy of review.
